What is Mark Lawsons attitude towards the television programme Essay Mark Lawsons article for the Guardian Newspaper The 1940s House gives information to the readers about a television programme yet to be screened. He gives his personal and judgemental opinions but his attitude towards it is very positive. The type of language he uses in the article is flattering and persuasive. He describes the programme as fascinating, inspired, unmatched and great, this shows that he found the programme interesting and worth viewing and he would like to encourage others to watch it. Mark Lawson uses emotive language as he explains how the personal suffering that the Hymers experience is genuine. The hunger, pressure, and tensions are all inevitable parts of this experiment but they lead to fanatical behaviour, as Ben becomes Fuel Warden and dishonesty as granny half-inches a slice of cake. Hunger is a real problem with the boys becoming visibly hungry and grannys speech of guilty justification because she considers that she is always last in the food-chain. Mark Lawson suggests that the viewers will experience moral indigestion as they watch the programme: this shows his sympathy and admiration towards the Hymers as they face their daily challenges. Mark Lawson points out in his article that the educational side of the programme is exceptionally good. Many valid and interesting facts are presented softly but this makes the information easy to understand and hard to forget. For example it would be difficult to ignore the fact that many mothers died as a result of falling downs the stairs during a blackout because they wanted to comfort a crying child. He considers the programme to be a virtual experience museum and that it is a very good way of teaching people about history, particularly the young. By watching the Hymers spend nine weeks living in the 1940s we will be able to enjoy an entertaining and educational programme. After reading the article I think that Mark Lawsons attitude towards the programme was one of admiration and praise. He obviously enjoyed watching The 1940s House and this is shown throughout his writing which is informative, entertaining and persuasive and I think would encourage many readers to watch the programme. In this extract from his autobiography, John Walsh recalls his impression of life in Battersea in the 1960s. Explain how Walsh evokes his childhood in the sixties? How effectively does his choice of language convey this period of his life? John Walsh evokes his childhood memories in the 1960s by making comparisons between Battersea, where he was living and Chelsea where he would have liked to have been living. His descriptions of the two areas are in complete contrast and his desire to cross over the river shows his lack of enthusiasm for Battersea and his desire for a better life. In his autobiography he describes Chelsea as a swinging and happening place where he could marvel and be dazzled by the shops. It was where the sixties were taking place with groovy events, shops with wacky names and beautiful people but there was a bridge between him and this wonderful place. He implies that this is not just a physical obstacle, crossing a bridge, but crossing into a completely different way of life and one that he did not fit in with. His opinion of Battersea is completely different he describes it as yobdom, alien, hard, unwelcoming and unhomely. The shops are meagre with their boring names and uninteresting merchandise, and even the air smells disgusting. In my opinion his childhood was not very happy and his idyllic and dreamy impression of Chelsea gave him something to aspire to.

Karl Jaspers and Seung Sahn Essay -- Compare Contrast Philosophy Essay

Karl Jaspers and Seung Sahn In this paper I will be making a comparison between the thoughts of Karl Jaspers and Korean Zen master Seung Sahn on the nature of consciousness and transcendence. The essays in question by Jaspers are his essays â€Å"On the Origin of My Philosophy,† written in 1941, and his lectures on the significance of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche and â€Å"the Encompassing,† given in 1935 (p. 158). The other text being studied is The Compass of Zen, a compilation of Seung Sahn’s lectures on the three main branches of Buddhism. The Compass of Zen was begun in the 1960s as a basic text to explain the â€Å"bone,† or common essence, of Buddhism to Sahn’s Zen students. The 1960s brought a sharp rise on interest in Buddhism among Americans, and The Compass of Zen is often used as a primer to help Westerners understand its teachings. Thus, Sahn has combined teachings from all over Asia (the three main branches of Hinayana, Mahayana, and Zen Buddhism) into one text. Ja sper’s philosophy is similarly based on the desire for a â€Å"universal historical view.† He considered the three main sources of philosophical thought to be India, the Orient, and the Western tradition beginning with the Greeks. He writes that it is important to understand many different types of philosophies because they all spring from the basic human desire for understanding. As he writes in Kaufmann’s anthology, â€Å"there is more than one universal truth in man.† Both Jaspers and Sahn are trying to create a universally applicable philosophy of inner reflection (meditation) to gain transcendence (enlightenment, nirvana, moshka, satori); in practical terms, inner peace. Jaspers’ philosophy is based in the idea that philosophy is ruined by attempts to put it into ... ... mentioned in Jaspers, it is prominent in the thinking of both Bergman and Camus.) As we can see, the philosophies of Jaspers and Seung Sahn agree on many of the same essential points, particularly on the structure and origin of consciousness. Where the two differ is in questions of methodology. Jaspers wants to stretch the limits of thought to find transcendence, while Buddhism (particularly Zen) tries to go to a place beyond thought, before thought, and thinks it best to do this by not thinking. Dickens writes Oliver Twist Essay

Dickens creates sympathy for Oliver and the other orphans throughout the first four chapters of the book. He does this by describing in depth the neglect, mistreatment and emotions of the children. There is a strong example of this at the end of the first chapter when Dickens writes â€Å"Oliver cried lustily. If he could have known that he was an orphan, left to the tender mercies of church-wardens and overseers, perhaps he would have cried the louder. † Oliver suffers dearly while living in the workhouse; he is quite regularly made an example of. One of the occasions he is made an example of is when he is forced to ask for more gruel by the other orphans. For doing this he is harshly beaten by cane in front of the other children and is then imprisoned. Oliver and the other orphans were beaten both mentally and physically, neglected and starved from birth, until either leaving the workhouse as slave laborers or dieing. Oliver is terrified of Mr.Gamfield he openly shows his emotion to the whole board of the workhouse when in chapter three he falls to his knees, praying that they would order him back the room, that they would starve him, beat him, kill him. He prays for all of this rather than them send him away with Mr. Gamfield In the time of workhouses the standard of living was near to none. The unwealthy basically had no choice to but to enter a workhouse. They would work for a roof and little food. All of the people in the workhouse had to sleep on the hard floor and receive poor medical attention. Overall the living condition were appalling, Charles Dickens uses irony to create a feeling of how bad the conditions where, a good example of this is that nearly every member of staff is overweight even them giving out the tiny amount of gruel to the orphans. Dickens attempts to create a feeling of pity for the orphans, by doing this we can see that he is trying to relive poverty, stop other people from going through what he went through. Dickens somehow manages to take a subject as important as poverty and put it across by using humor, and at the same time still manages to keep that feeling of seriousness.

The British may have lost the war but they were still known as the most powerful country in the world due to their skilled and professional soldiers. The Americans only won the war only because they were aided by the French king who was opposed to offering the same liberties to his people . In addition, an important event that led to the abolishment of black slaves was the Somerset case in the American colonies and the laws being made throughout the years since many slaves walked away from their masters. However, in 1778 when Virginia outlawed the importation of slaves it took years until slaves were abolished. Some slaves were being abolished immediately in the North by the constitution, but in 1776 was when Vermont writes a constitution in which slavery was eradicated. Whereas in Boston, Massachusetts, the abolishment of slavery did not go through until a slave sued the state. Another point that was brought up by Alfred and Ruth Blumrosen was how slavery united the 13 colonies and how America was built on a compromise on slavery and if it were not for the northern states not assenting to the southern demands there would be no nation, seeing as the souths economy is based on plantation . The attitudes of these men were influenced by the nature of the planting process and them being known as a successful tobacco grower was a personal achievement and considered it their independence. All in all, due to the occurrence of the American Revolution thousands of slaves were freed, there were also more blacks freed from the aftermath of the Revolution than any other war prior to that. Britain saw them as toys who were used to fight for the Empire on a condition being that they could be granted their freedom in exchange for taking arms. The slaveholders of the south did not however plan on giving weapons to the black slaves in fear that they would turn against their owners. Thus the northerners armed black slaves due to them having too much to do and to keep the farm going. Events such as the Somerset case that initiated the American Revolution also brought slaves to fight not only for their independence but for themselves and to be recognized as individuals rather than as objects. Conclusion While the Revolution responded to a variety of issues what really motivated the slaves was the decision in determining which side would result to their freedom the fastest. Many black slaves played a major role during this time period, both free and enslaved. Additionally, the American Revolution played a large role in defining the institution of slavery in the American colonies, but it also impacted the global slave trade for years to come. As a result Americans and British would not be here if it were not for the black slaves and how they were able to contribute in using both their farming and skills used in war.
